The Call to Worship and Invocation

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.  This is the day that the Lord hath made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Dear Lord, I pray that you will make me an instrument of Your peace.

Scripture Reading -- II Timothy 2:1-13 (NLT)

2 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

3 Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. 5 And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. 7 Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things.

8 Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. 9 And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.

11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him,  we will also live with him.
12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him.  If we deny him, he will deny us.
13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

The third day he rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of  God the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of Sins, the Resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

We are praying for you.

Rev.  Keith Johnson, Octavian Rodriquez, Angelikka Carter, James Spaulding, Dwaine Giggans,

Johnie Mae Williams, Christine Ferguson, Rev. Michael Henderson, Rev. Veronica Buckner, Betty Jo Smith,  Bishop and Episcopal Supervisor, George D. Crenshaw and family, in the passing of their son.

Come Heavenly Father.  Abide with us.  Please forgive us for our sins.  We love and adore You and seek Your face.  Our hope is in Thee.  We pray for those who are less fortunate, we pray for those who have much, and we pray for those who are at their wits end with the pressures of life.

God we acknowledge that You have been better to us than we could have ever been to ourselves.  We thank You for Your faithfulness, grace, and mercy towards us.  We depend on You because You are the solid rock upon which our hope is built.  We magnify and bless Your holy name. Lord, bless all who are sick and bereaved.  Please ease the pain of Bishop Crenshaw and his family as they deal with the realization of losing their son.  May his soul forever rest with You.

Now as we depart from Your throne of grace, we pray that You will keep your loving arms of protection around us. Please continue to bless our Pastor and our First Church family.  In the matchless, marvelous name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.

Sermonic Scripture Reading - I Samuel 1-4 (KJV)

And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.

3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
