SHELTER-IN-PLACE WORSHIP GUIDE SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2020 Welcome to First AME Zion Church San Jose. Social distancing cannot keep us from drawing nearer to God. The Call to Worship and Invocation Blessed Lord, you are great, the heavens speak of your glory. You do wonders in heaven and we see the signs on earth. We the work of your hands worship you today, accept our worship in Jesus name. As we continue in today’s service, we want to see your great power move. Let every one of us encounter you in a different way. Bless us and give us everlasting joy in you . Morning Hymn – We Have Come Into This House Scripture Reading (Romans 8:12-17 ) 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; The third day he rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic* Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of Sins, the Resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Altar Call/Pastoral Prayer – Bless Me We are praying for you, Rev. Keith Johnson, Octavian Rodriquez, Angelikka Carter, James Spaulding, Rev. and Mrs. Braxton, Dwaine Giggans , Johnie Mae Williams, Christine Ferguson, Rev. Michael Henderson, Rev. Veronica Buckner, Curtis and Faye Bomar, Jean Wilson and Family, Pinkie Westry, Paula Westry, and Brother Daniel Dear Heavenly Father, We come before Your Holy Presence with adoration in our hearts. You have been so gracious and loving to us and You have been better to us than we have been to ourselves. It is Your grace and mercy that have brought us through this trying time. Lord, we bow today to pray for those who need You to heal their bodies. We pray for those who are troubled in their minds. We ask for special grace for our sisters and brothers who don't know how they will make it financially in this critical time in their lives. We pray for the homeless and for the hopeless. You are a shelter in the time of a storm, a bridge over troubled water, and You are our refuge and strength. We are leaning and depending on you to provide for us, even when we have become doubtful. Father, You know all about us and You know what we stand in need of. Thank You Jesus for supplying our needs and keeping Your loving arms of protection around us. Amen. Sermonic Scripture Reading -- Romans 12:1-5 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Sermon -- A Living Sacrifice - Part 1 Pastor Rogers This week's message is part 1 of a 2-part discourse on submitting our lives as a living sacrifice unto God. As we go through our life, we see many examples of people who have all the outward signs of success. But, when we look closely at these people, we discover that many of them make destructive, and oftentimes, fatal mistakes. Such contradictory behavior is usually rooted in the fact that people do not understand their own humanity and subjection to guidelines and rules of fair play. In other words, there are people who destroy their lives by breaking the law – simply because they do not understand the law. More than anything else, people in today’s society do not understand that their lives are not their own to do with as they please. They can’t grasp the truth of 1st Corinthians 6:19 and 20 that says: “19 What? Know ye not that that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own ? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God’s.” 1st Corinthians 7:23, goes further and tells us, “Ye are bought with a price: be not ye the servants of men. ” I need to stop right here to make it plain that this morning’s sermon is not directed at people who don’t know the difference between right and wrong. Today, I’m focusing on people who believe that they are holy and righteous. I’m talking about people who know all the rules – but their own greatness makes them believe that the rules don’t apply to them. I’m talking about those who profess to be following Christ. I’m talking about those who talk the bible but walk in a different direction. I’m talking about the devout churchgoers, who, when you examine their lives, show that going to church doesn’t have much effect on them. We see these people everyday. They claim to be Christians. They go to church every Sunday – But Monday through Saturday, they are card-carrying members of Satan’s Hell’s Angels Club. So, it is because of these kinds of people that Paul saw the necessity of writing to the Church at Rome. And, if anyone was qualified to write on this subject, it was Paul. You will recall that, before Paul was changed on the Damascus Road, he was determined to destroy the church. But, after his transformation, Paul became a Living Sacrifice in his commitment to spread the Gospel throughout the world. You can see that, when Paul wrote this letter, he was definitely aware of the problems that existed for Christians in his day. He recognized that even though people accepted Christ, it did not mean that they always understood the difference between what was wrong and right. Paul also understood that people did not automatically quit doing what was wrong. This is probably what inspired Paul to write to the church at Rome with an earnest and sincere plea, based on the mercy that God had shown them. So, in this scripture, Paul says, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service . The image of a living sacrifice that Paul uses in this scripture comes straight out of the Old Testament. Imagine for a moment that you are an ancient Israelite. You believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You try to live, as best you can, by God’s law. But you are honest with yourself! You know deep, down in your heart that you have failed to do the right thing – not once – but time and time again! The problem you’re facing is what do you do about it? You know what the law requires. This is the procedure of that day. You go out to your herd of sheep or calves and pick out an animal for sacrifice. It should be the best animal that you have. Let’s just say you chose a lamb. You take that “sacrificial lamb” to the priest. The priest sacrifices the lamb on your behalf. Once the lamb has been slain and its life has been offered up to God, you return to your home, having made your peace with your Lord. Now, as we can see from this scenario, the Israelite sacrificial system had a lot going for it. It reminded people of their duty to God. It demanded that they give their best. It allowed them to feel that they had re-established their relationship with their creator. From this, we can see that this sacrificial system was good! But, believe me, it had some real flaws! The main flaw was that – no matter how much these Israelites sacrificed, they always came home feeling like it wasn’t much of a sacrifice when you consider all that they had done wrong. Of course, the Lord himself knew that this “ceremony” of sacrifice was flawed, and we could never make a sacrifice that would cover the multitude of our sins – so one day he made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He sent His Son to die to demonstrate the real meaning of sacrifice. The sacrifice of God’s Son showed us that, if we would accept His sacrifice, we would never have to make animal sacrifices again. And, a lot of us accepted the sacrifice of Christ, and foolishly called it EVEN! Here is where the problem comes in. Paul says, calling it “even” is where we make our mistake. Some people say that, “If God himself made the ultimate sacrifice, then there is nothing left for us to do. That is why they call it ‘even’.” Paul says that this way of thinking is WRONG. We can never call it EVEN. The message for us is that sacrifice is just as important today as it ever was. Only now, it is the sacrifice of our lives and it is a sacrifice made out of love and gratitude -- instead of a sense of duty. Let me say that again – today we are called to sacrifice our lives for the cause of Christ and that sacrifice is made out of love and gratitude -- instead of a sense of duty. You need to say, because God cared enough to send His Son down to die for my sins, I will give him the best of my service. The life that we offer to God is to be as spotless and as blameless as that perfect lamb that was offered up by the early Israelites. Our lives must be the best that we can offer. I’m sure some of you may be thinking – Rev., this sounds good, but “How do I offer my life as a living sacrifice?” Well, there are some things to consider: First of all, we cannot conform to this world. The Word says, But be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that we may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God . Now, in this age in which we live, being a conformist is much easier than being a NON-conformist. Living in today’s world is not easy and there is a danger in allowing our lifestyles and life choices – morally and ethically – to conform to those of the world. One thing that causes problems among church people is that we often depend on others to set the standard for our living. Unfortunately, the standard and tone for living are mostly set by people outside the church. Perhaps if our standards were set by great missionaries or statesmen, we might not have so many problems. But the reality is that most of our standards of behavior are set by celebrities and people who believe that the highest priority in life is the attainment of fame and fortune. And even those who base their lives on wealth – don’t really want it for the sake of being wealthy. They want wealth because it sets the stage for the fake lives that they live based on what they can buy, who can have the most facelifts, tummy tucks, and look the best. They want wealth because it allows them to live in huge houses and drive fast cars. We live in a world where the greatest virtues are to have fame, fortune, and beauty. We live in a world where the greatest sins in life are to be POOR and UNATTRACTIVE. But, Paul tells us that we can’t have it both ways. You can’t allow yourself to conform to the standards of this world, and still hope to present your body as a living sacrifice to God. Now I’m sure that you realize that I’m not talking about wealth in the sense of financial stability. Nor am I talking about your body in the physical sense. I’m talking about the spiritual YOU, in terms of your mind. It is not enough that we refuse to conform our actions to this world. That leaves us pretty much in “neutral” territory. Paul says, we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Isn’t it interesting that Paul says that our minds will have to be changed? Surely he was saying to us that, no matter how much we change our outward appearance, until we make up our minds that a change is going to take place, a change will never come for us. Becoming a living sacrifice takes a complete change of mind. A person who has not had his life transformed by the renewing of their mind will never know peace. Paul said this himself in another context. He said, Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus . (Philippians 2:5). Church, the only mind that brings peace is the mind of Christ. Until we have the same mind in us as the mind of Christ, we will never really be able to make our lives the living sacrifice that God would have us to make. Amen. FIRST AME ZION CHURCH VIRTUAL WORSHIP SUNDAY, October 25, 2020 The Call to Worship and Invocation O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. This is the day that the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Dear Lord, I pray that you will make me an instrument of Your peace. Song of the Morning – Every Praise Scripture Reading -- II Timothy 2:1-13 (NLT) 2 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 3 Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. 5 And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. 7 Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. 8 Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. 9 And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. 11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. SHELTER-IN-PLACE WORSHIP GUIDE SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2020 Welcome to First AME Zion Church San Jose. Your presence brings us great joy. We thank God for you and pray that you are blessed by this worship experience. Come on in this house. The Call to Worship and Invocation Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Morning Hymn – Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior Pass me not, O gentle Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Let me at Thy throne of mercy, Find a sweet relief Kneeling there in deep contrition; Help my unbelief. [Chorus:] (We're calling you) Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Scripture Reading (1 Peter 4:12-19 ) 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. We thank you Heavenly Father that there is food on our tables, clothes on our backs, and provisions, more than we can count provided for us. As we enter another week of uncertainity in our homes, communities, and even in our churches, we rest assured that there is certainity in the fact that you will never leave or forsake and for that assurance we say thank you. We pray for the sick, the homeless the unemployed, and all of those who are less fortunate or leaving on the margins of life. We pray that your will s done and that you will meet their needs. Regarding our Church reopening, Bishop Staccato Powell sends this message : “We concur with Bishop Kenneth Monroe’s message to encourage his people to embrace “A Place Called Wait.” . . . “A Place Called Wait” allows us time for reflection. I am urging our pastors and people to not assemble indoors until further notice. . . We must acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Simply stated, God is in charge, not mayors, governors, presidents, presiding elders, pastors, or bishops, for which we are delighted. Thank you for adhering to these directives. Sermonic Scripture Reading -- I Corinthians 6:12, 19-20 12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Song of Preparation -- I Give Myself Away Performed by William McDowell Performed by Pastor E. Dewey Smith Performed by First Baptist Church of Glenarden's Sunbeams Choir Sermon -- A Living Sacrifice - Part 2 Pastor Rogers Last week we looked at Paul as he explained to the Christians at Rome the meaning and importance of being a living sacrifice unto God. We also concluded that, just as it was with the Romans, people in today’s society do not understand that their lives are not their own to do with as they please. For further discussion, we’re considering both Romans 12:1-5 and First Corinthians 6:12, 19 and 20. In 1st Corinthians 6 we find Paul giving some principles on what a sacrificial life looks like. Paul’s principles on Christian conduct begin in 1st Corinthians 6:12, which says, “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient.” And in verses 19 and 20, he says, “19 What? Know ye not that that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God’s.” He applies the principles of Christian conduct, the avoidance of becoming a stumbling block, and the fallacy of thinking that everything is character building, as he ministers to the Christian believers. When Paul said that “everything which God has made is good!” He added a proviso! -- “Everything which God has made is good – PROVIDED THAT WE USE IT THE RIGHT WAY. Genesis 1:25 bears the truth of Paul’s statement because it tells us, “When God looked out upon his whole creation, he said that it was good.” Everything started out good – in other words – everything started out right, but wrong evolved because man not only misused his own life, but he also misused the things which God had made. Think about Adam and Eve in the garden. They were good, the garden was good, and the fruit was good. God had left them with the right instructions – “not to eat of the fruit.” But because Adam and Eve ignored their knowledge of right and wrong and ate the fruit, every person since that time has been faced with the dilemma of distinguishing between right and wrong. Because Paul knew living a sacrificial life required the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and the fact that there was a human tendency to do the wrong thing, the Christians at Corinth would have a problem, so Paul cautioned them that, “All things are not expedient,” What he means here is that all things in God’s good creation can be used in ways that are bad and destructive. First Church, you need to know that God’s creation is right -- but something is terribly wrong when you misuse and corrupt God’s gifts. In the last part of 1st Corinthians 6, verses 19 through 20, Paul drives home this basic principle by saying, and I’m paraphrasing., “All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Anything which enslaves me, anything which gets a dominating control over my mind, my body, or my will is wrong. My body belongs to God. It is the temple of His Holy Spirit.” As we go on, we see Paul emphasizing that “anything which defiles the Temple of the Spirit is a sin against God.” In short, it is WRONG. Now that Paul had addressed “self,” I believe that he knew that it was important for the people to know how their actions influenced others. Listen to what he said, “But, take heed, lest by any means this liberty of yours becomes a stumbling block to them that are weak.” The avoidance of becoming a stumbling block There is no question as to the meaning of this message. Christians must not do anything which causes those who are weaker to stumble or take a step back in their fight to overcome their weakness. In this passage, Paul reminds us that we are responsible for our brothers, especially the younger or the weaker ones. They are looking to us for an example. Let’s look at it this way. There’s a sister in the Church who needs a job. This sister has had a problem with alcohol. But, she needs a job and because I work at a temp agency, I can get her a job as a clerk in a liquor store. I’m going to get a bonus if I place her in the liquor store position this week, rather than wait a couple of weeks until Macy’s is hiring in the cosmetic department. Because we are self-serving people, we ignore the fact that she is an alcoholic and encourage her to take the liquor store job – where all she does is sell liquor – 8 hours a day – 5 days a week. Well, nine times out of 10, no matter how well-intended we are, putting her in a place that will tempt her in her struggle with alcohol, will cause her to stumble in her Christian journey. When we do this, we are sinning against God and against our sister. And that is WRONG. As Christians we need to realize that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God and not everything that we do builds us up! The Fallacy of Thinking that Everything is Character Building In Chapter 10, verse 23, a third principle is underlined. Paul strips away the mask which covers so many of our moral decisions. He uses these sharp words as a knife to cut away at our hearts: “All things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” In other words, “Not everything builds me up – not everything builds character and there is a fallacy in thinking that it does.” Now, my brothers and sisters, here is a principle to live by. Listen Church, life is short, and time is precious. CORVID-19 is teaching us that this is true! We simply do not have time to waste our minds and energy on things which tear others and ourselves down. I don’t care how much you like it – gossiping about your brothers and sisters in Christ tears you down. No matter what you think and no matter what you said and why you said it, when you talk about people it is wrong and it tears down. AND Christians ought to be about building up. Christians do not have the right to read or indulge in anything which does not build them up and make them stronger and better-informed servants of God. People of God, if we are going to know the difference between right and wrong, we’ve got to be about building up! We ought to measure everything we read, Everything we see, Everything we say, and Everything we do by this standard: Does it build me up in body, mind, and spirit? Does it make my life purer and nobler? If it builds you and the body of Christ up in body, mind, and spirit – If it makes your life purer and nobler and is an example of Christ in your life, then it is RIGHT AND GOOD. Church, I’ll close with these thoughts: Never forget that we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds. It is not about our outward appearance or the impressions we make. Knowing the difference between right and wrong is life changing. The only mind that brings peace is the mind of Christ. Until we have the same mind in us, as the mind of Christ, we will never really be able to make our lives the living sacrifice that God would have us to make. Amen. Invitation to Discipleship The door of the church is open. Now is the time when we offer Christ to you. If you want to be a living sacrifice unto God, now is the time to make that decision. Without discussion, dialogue or debate, take that step and unite with First AME Zion Church today. Call (408) 688-6980 and First Church will celebrate with you as you make the best decision of your life. Benediction– Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy; To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Expect the Best, Pastor Rogers Performed by Andre' Crouch and Marvin Winans

FIRST AME ZION CHURCH VIRTUAL WORSHIP SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 2021 Welcome to First AME Zion Church San Jose. Your presence brings us great joy. We thank God for you and pray that you are blessed by this worship experience. The Call to Worship and Invocation The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him. This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Others of us are suffering health issues and financial burdens, but we know that you have all power in your hands and that you will provide our every need. We pray Lord for the desires of our heart and we pray for a stronger determination to serve and follow thee. Now as we approach this coming week, be with us Lord and give us the strength and courage that we need to face this dying world. We thank you Lord for the healing of our land from the horrible reality of the coronavirus pandemic. Open our eyes that we may see that you are the Living God and besides you there is none other. Let this be our testimony as we move forward in our homes, schools, and places of work and recreation. These and many other blessings we pray in Jesus holy and righteous name. The Sermonic Scripture - Mark 11:7-11 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him ; and he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strewed them in the way. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come , he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. (King James Version) Click Music icon for sound Sermon - The Passion of Christ Today marks the beginning of Holy Week. It is significant to note that one-third of the Gospel of Mark (Chapters 11 through 15) is taken up with the recording of what happened during Holy Week. The focus of Jesus’ earthly ministry was concentrated in this short period of five Chapters. His primary mission in the world was to procure man’s salvation by His death on the cross. Here is the heart of Christianity. Come with me as we take a journey through Holy Week. Sunday (Mark 11:1-11) On Palm Sunday, Jesus made the triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus presented himself to the Jewish nation as her Messiah. The crowd of Galilean pilgrims accompanied Him down the western slope of the Mount of Olives. As they walked, they spread garments and palm leaves as a carpet in the street for the donkey on which he rode. The crowd was excited and their shouts of praise showed that they expected Jesus to enter the Holy City in triumph and set up his messianic kingdom on earth. But, we learn from the other Gospels that the Jewish leaders rejected Jesus, and so, the “triumphal entry” ended in tears. Luke 19:41 says, “And when we was come near, he beheld the City and wept over it .” This was Israel’s last opportunity to accept Jesus of Nazareth as her Messiah and they rejected him big time! That was Palm Sunday, now let’s look at Monday. Monday (Mark 11:12-19) Monday was, what I call a “double C” day! A day of Cursing and Cleansing! On the way back into Jerusalem from Bethany, Jesus saw a fig tree with leaves on it. Since fig trees normally have fruit before leaves, He naturally expected to find some ripe figs waiting for him. When he found no fruit, Jesus CURSED, the tree. Now, history says that some have criticized the Master for cursing the tree. But there is a lesson here, God doesn’t like hypocrites – You know the kind, looking holy and full of hell. So, the tree was perpetrating as a fig tree – it had leaves, but no fruit. So, when Jesus “cursed” the tree – that was the first “C.” And, I need to tell you right now, there’s a difference between “Cussing” the tree and “cursing” the tree. Jesus did not use profane language and “Cuss” the tree out. He simply put a “curse” on the tree, saying – “Let no one ever again eat fruit from you.” (Mark 11:14) Now, the second “C” was Cleansing the Temple. Jesus went into the Temple and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple. He overthrew the tables of the Money Changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Not only that, he would not allow that any man should carry any vessel through the Temple. Mark Chapter 11, verse 17, tells us, 17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.” There is no doubt about it. Jesus cleaned house! And, when he finished, he left and went back to Bethany. Now, we’re ready for Tuesday. Tuesday Mark lets us know that Tuesday was the busiest day of Holy Week. This Tuesday was the last day of Jesus’ public ministry. Mark recorded some 13 events as taking place on Tuesday. And, even though 13 events are recorded, the event that took “center stage” was the questioning of Jesus’ authority. On Tuesday, when Jesus went back into Jerusalem, he came to the same Temple that he had cleansed the day before. And, as he began teaching the priests, scribes and elders began to question Him, “By what authority and who’s authority do you do thee things?” In other words, who gave you the authority to cleanse the Temple? By what authority do you cut out our profits? Who told you to mess with our money changing and selling? Who gave you the power to come into the temple that we had built and stop our selling? Jesus said, “I will answer all of your questions if you will just answer one for me. Where did John get his authority? Obviously, the answer to both questions was the same; but the Jewish leaders refused to commit themselves because they didn’t want to look bad. They wanted Jesus to look bad. So, they said, “We cannot tell.” Hearing their response, Jesus refused to answer their question. Wednesday After a very busy Tuesday, there is no record of any activity on Wednesday. We conclude that it was a “quiet” Wednesday! I personally believe that, although it may have been quiet, Jesus was busy communing with the Father because the next day he communed with THE 12. Thursday – The Last Supper and the Institution of the Lord’s Supper The Last Supper Mark writes in Chapter 14 that Jesus ate the Passover meal with His disciples and, while they were eating, Jesus told them – “One of you will betray me.” The scripture goes on to say, “And they began to be sorrowful and say unto Him – one by one – “Is it I?” And another said, Is it I? And, he answered and said unto them, ‘it is one of the twelve that dippeth with me in the dish’.” Now listen to what Matthew 26:25 says happened. “Then Judas, which betrayed him answered and said, Master is it I?” He said unto him, Thou hast said.” The Lord’s Supper And, as they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it and brake it and gave it to his disciples and said – take, eat – this is my body. And, he took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them saying, “drink ye all of it. For this is my blood of the New Testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” It was on this occasion that Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper – Holy Communion. And, after they finished supper a lot happened – They went out to the Mount of Olives! He predicted Peter’s denial. Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, ‘til sweat dropped like blood from his brow. They arrested Jesus and took Him to Caiaphas the High Priest where the scribes and elders were assembled. After much debate, Matthew 26:66 says the High Priest asked, “What think ye?” And, they answered and said, “He is guilty of death.” A Bad Friday When Jesus was sentenced to death, it was surely a bad Friday (or a GOOD FRIDAY) depending on how you look at it. If you had been there and had little faith, it was a bad Friday. But, if you really got to know Jesus, then it was a Good Friday! In Matthew 27 it says that “early the next morning – Friday morning -- Pilate questioned Jesus. Now Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent of the charges brought by the multitude. Remember in Luke 23, they had accused him of “perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.” And, it was here that Pilate quoted these famous words, “ . . . I have found no fault in this man. . . .” (Luke 23:14) But, because the crowd wanted Jesus crucified, Pilate wasn’t strong enough to follow his conscience. So, he turned Jesus over to the soldiers. They stripped him, Put a purple robe on him, Made him a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, And, they mocked him, spit on him, beat him; Yet, he never said a word! They put a cross on his back. They led him to Calvary, and they made a black man named Simon carry his cross. And, when they got to Calvary – or Golgotha’s Hill, the place of the Skull – they hung Jesus between two thieves and crucified him. Thank God, the WEEK OR THE WORD doesn’t end there! Saturday , Matthew 27:63 Matthew says that on the next day – Saturday – the chief priest and Pharisees went to Pilate saying, “We remember that deceiver saying on the third day he would rise again. So we need to make sure the tomb is sealed and that guards are there so his disciples can’t come and steal his body and say he rose from the dead !” Amen. [This is not how the story ends. Next Sunday we will see what happened.] INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP - Now is the time when we offer Christ to you. If you wish to unite with our Church, please call (408) 688-6980.
